£55,000 settlement for Rugby League Player

Keen cyclist and amateur Rugby League player, Rob Gough, is awarded settlement after serious road collision caused back and head injuries.

Rob Gough* was cycling home from work looking forward to playing with his young daughter as well as planning the work he needed to do on his recently bought house. He did not make it home that day. His next memory was looking at the smiling face of his wife Jill, a few days later in hospital. He was conscious during that time but had no memory of the accident or the first few days in hospital and at first had no idea where he was or how he had got there.   Rob was in hospital because the negligent driver of a 4X4 had not seen Rob cycling home from work that day and had pulled out from a side road into his path giving him no chance to avoid the collision.

Rob was wearing a helmet which did it's job and probably saved his life. The force of the collision was still enough to cause a head injury and loss of memory for a few days. Rob had also suffered a fracture to his spine and had to have an operation to stabilize the fracture. The surgeons inserted a titanium rod to hold his damaged spine together. Ironically, Rob worked for a company that makes medical implants like the one that the surgeon's used.

Rob instructed Tim Beasley, of Levenes Birmingham Office, who specialises in cycle accident claims, to pursue his claim whilst at the same time starting his rehabiliation. Remarkably, Rob got back virtually all his memory with just a slight problem matching names to faces. Rob was strong and fit before the accident and with the help of the metal implant in his spine he has recovered very well and has been able to resume almost all the activities he did before the accident pain free.  Regrettably, because of the nature of the injuries he has hung up his Rugby boots for the last time.

Levenes secured an admission of liability from the car driver's insurers and once all the medical evidence was finalized settlement of the claim for £55,000 was agreed. The settlement reflected the pain and suffering, not being able to return to Rugby and various other losses and expenses which Rob had incurred.

The car driver's insurers paid the legal costs and Rob received his settlement in full.

*name changed to protect Rob's identity.
