Manual Handling Injury

Warehouse clerk's settlement for fractured wrist caused when lifting unstable load

Miss Jayne Plater worked as a dispatch/warehousing clerk. In the course of her work she had to unload a lorry and whilst doing so picked up a fairly large box, about 60cm high and 30cm wide. As she lifted the box something heavy inside it fell against the side of her wrist and she immediately felt pain in her arm and hand. We found out that the box had contained a large blanking plate weighing 18kg, which had been left upright in the box with only minimal packing. We further discovered that there had been previous complaints by staff about the supplier of the box, relating to improperly and unsafely packed items. The client suffered a hairline crack in a small bone in her wrist which, although it was substantially recovered in three months, initially required a plaster cast. The client received £3,000 in compensation, with legal fees paid on top.
