Pensioner killed in Police Crash

A 72-year-old pedestrian has been killed in a collision with a police car as it responded to an emergency call.

Brian Elton was hit by the marked car as it drove through Chingford, east London. He was taken the Royal London Hospital after the accident, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigations by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have been dropped after the watchdog said it was satisfied the vehicle was sounding its siren and flashing its lights.

Talking about the investigation of a senior member of staff, the IPCC said: 'He has carried out an independent assessment of the case, which included examining information from the in-car data recorder and independent witness statements.

'The IPCC is satisfied that the police car had its lights and sirens activated and was travelling at an acceptable speed for a police car responding to an emergency.

'A decision has therefore been taken that the force will continue the investigation without further IPCC involvement.'

The Metropolitan Police`s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) is investigating the circumstances of the crash, which saw Mr Elton, from Chingford, struck by the Vauxhall Astra in the Ridgeway area.
