Driver jailed for fiancé's death

A drunken driver has been jailed for three years for killing her fiancé by running him down outside a pub.

Caroline Broad, 41, was three-and-a-half times over the legal drink drive limit when she hit Christopher Phillips, 40, on August 17, 2008.

Mr Phillips was crushed by the vehicle as it rolled on top of his chest after the couple had spent a day drinking in the Full Moon pub, in Twerton, near Bath.

On leaving the premises, Broad got into the driver's seat of her car and Mr Phillips went to the front of the car and leant on the bonnet.

Bristol Crown Court heard that he slid off as the automatic Vauxhall Vectra jumped forward between 1.6 and four metres crushing him.

Mr Phillips was taken to hospital but died a few hours later and Broad was arrested at the scene and found to have 119mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

She told police that she could not remember the car moving, but knew she had been in the driver's seat.

Broad told the court they had been together for eight years and were very much in love and described Mr Phillips as the best thing that ever happened to her.
