Operators should 'protect clients'The widow of a man who died after contracting salmonella while on holiday in Italy has called on tour operators to do all they can to ensure the safety of their clients.
At an inquest into the death of Geoffrey Appleyard, Worcestershire coroner Geraint Williams concluded the 71-year-old picked up the disease after eating a meal at the Grand Hotel on the shores of Lake Garda.
His wife Jean, who also fell ill, said lessons should be learned over the death.
She said: "Geoffrey died, other people ended up in hospital and lessons have to be learned from incidents like this".
It is the responsibility of tour operators to do all they can to ensure their customers are protected from similar outbreaks, she added.
Speaking after the hearing in which a verdict of misadventure was recorded, Mrs Appleyard said she had "been convinced that salmonella was a major factor" in her husband's death, and that it was "appalling" that something that serious was present at the hotel.
