Five injured in motorway smash

A six-vehicle pile-up on the M6 closed a busy section of the motorway for five hours on Tuesday.

Eight fire engines and three ambulances attended the scene of the smash, which saw one woman sustain serious injuries. Four others - a female driver in 40s and three men between the ages of 30 and 40 - were taken to the same hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

A spokesman for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance said: "One of the cars was very badly damaged. Its driver, a woman in her 20s, was trapped for some time.

"She has a suspected head injury and was taken by land ambulance to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire."

The accident occurred on the southbound M6 between junctions two and three at around 7.45am. The lorry driver was discharged at the scene.
