Tractor crash farmer fined £4,000

A farmer who severely injured a motorcyclist by not raising an attachment on his tractor as the vehicle passed over a road has been fined £4,000.

Peter Wilkinson, from Suttons Farm, Formby, was crop-spraying in Great Altcar, Merseyside, when he turned his tractor without raising a boom arm.

Motorcyclist Allan Smith was driving down an adjoining lane and was hit by the arm, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

Mr Smith can no longer work or ride his motorbike. His passenger, Andrew Friar, was also injured in the crash.

Mr Wilkinson was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 costs at North Sefton Magistrates' Court, Southport, for breaching health and safety legislation regarding exposing the public to risk while working.
