Firm fined £10,000 for hand injury

An explosives firm has been fined £10,000 after a malfunctioning device severed two and a half fingers off an employee's hand at a site in Muirside.

Wigan-based Orica UK Ltd were fined after pleading guilty to two breaches of health and safety legislation in relation to the accident in February last year.

The employee, who was using a mobile explosives manufacturing unit at the time, used his hand to remove material causing a blockage in an auger feed device. While his hand was inside, the machinery started to turn.

The investigation into the incident found that there were deficiencies in Orica's risk assessment. There was no safe system of work for clearing blockages, the augers were inadequately guarded and the company provided insufficient supervision and training.
