Colliery shut after worker's death

Production at a coal mining site in Yorkshire has be halted following the death of a worker last week.

Kellingley colliery, run by the UK's biggest coal mining firm UK Coal, will remain closed for up to two weeks.

Ian Cameron, a 46-year-old worker, dies following an incident at the site.

The Health and Safety Executive had already been investigation the company over safety breaches following the deaths of other workers between 2006 and 2007.

Three people died at the Daw Mill site in Warwickshire, and another was killed at the Welbeck colliery.

An apparent equipment failure is thought to be to blame for the incident in which Mr Cameron died and UK Coal said the HSE had required it to halt production at the Kellingley site while alterations are made.

A spokesman for the company said the firm was stopping production "while suspect valves on the roof supports of the coal face are changed".

The HSE said it was aware of the latest incident and had launched an investigation.

Its prosecution of UK Coal over the previous deaths is due for an initial court hearing on November 26 at Doncaster Magistrates' Court.
