Tanning salon owner admits chargesThe owner of an unmanned tanning salon where a 14-year-old girl was badly burned has admitted five health and safety related charges.
Concerns over the tanning salon were raised with James Hadley, 25, owner of the Lextan salon in Barry, south Wales, four months before the girl was injured, a court heard. Although the charges do not relate to the girl's injuries, the incident prompted further inspection of the premises.
Prosecutor Lee Reynolds told Barry Magistrates' Court that health and safety inspectors from Vale of Glamorgan Council had raised concerns with Hadley about the salon in October 2008 and January 2009.
Hadley, of Neath Road, Resolven, south Wales, admitted failing to staff premises throughout opening hours, failing to ensure goggles were available for customers' use and failing to ensure sunbeds were capped at a maximum 15 minutes exposure.
He also admitted employing a young person without carrying out a risk assessment and making a false statement to the council. Mr Reynolds asked for two further charges to lie on the file.
