Driver fined over forklift deathAn experienced forklift truck driver who contributed to the death of a colleague after allowing him to stand on the forks of his truck using it as a makeshift lift has been fined £1,500 and ordered to pay court costs.
Andrew Mason, of The Poplars, Sutton-in-Craven, pleaded guilty to breaching section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 at Skipton Magistrates' Court over the incident which left Francis Roberts with serious injuries from which he later died.
The court heard how Mr Mason allowed Mr Roberts to stand on the forks of the truck to access pallets on the second deck of a two-tier lorry while working at Joda Freight in Crosshills on March 14 2006. Mr Roberts, 48, from Bradford was admitted to St James' Hospital in Leeds following the fall, where he later died.
After the hearing, HSE inspector Paul Yeadon said: "We hope that this tragic incident will serve as a lesson to all employers and employees who work with or near forklifts."
