Lorry driver bailed over bus crash

A 48-year-old lorry driver arrested on suspicion of careless driving after a crash caused a double-decker bus full of commuters to topple over has been released on bail, Scotland Yard has revealed.

The man was bailed until March pending further enquiries following questioning at a south London police station.

Passengers had to be cut free by fire fighters after the bus fell onto its side following the collision in the morning rush hour in Clapham, south-west London.

Two people are currently in hospital in a stable condition.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called at 8.30am after a DAF lorry driving out of a railway depot collided with the bus, which had around 30 people on board.

"The bus turned on to its side and some of the lorry's load - railway track - spilled into the road and on to the bus," a spokesman said.

The driver of the C3 bus was one of five people seriously hurt, along with four passengers, after the incident in Plough Road. A total of 17 people were believed to have been taken to hospital.

London Ambulance Service said a 27-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were taken "as a priority" to St George's Hospital, Tooting, south London, while another priority case, a 30-year-old man, was taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
