Paralysed man gets record damagesA Pontefract man left paralysed from the neck down in a car crash with an uninsured driver has been awarded compensation worth £8.35 million
Twenty seven-year-old Lukasz Borowski was travelling to work as a back seat passenger in a Peugeot 307 when the driver, Rozell Sands, crashed into a ditch in Cambridgeshire in November 2005.
He was left brain damaged, with a fractured spine and damage to his spinal cord, leaving him with permanent loss of movement and feeling below his shoulders - and attention, concentration and memory problems.
In May 2006, Sands was found guilty of offences connected to the crash.
Mr Borowski was awarded the £8.35 million long-term care package at Newcastle High Court on Tuesday, which is one of the highest payouts ever made in the UK.
His settlement was reached with the Motor Insurer's Bureau, which offers protection to people injured by the actions of uninsured, negligent drivers.
