Motorist who killed girl locked up

A driver who lost control of his car, killing a teenager, had been drinking despite taking medication for kidney failure, a court has heard.

Ryan Ellmore's car mounted the pavement in Harwich and hit Charlotte Blackburn, 17, walking home.

The 20-year-old, who fled the scene, was detained for eight years in a young offenders' institution, having admitted causing death by dangerous driving. His friends warned him not to drive just before the crash when he was driving at nearly twice the speed limit, Chelmsford Crown Court was told.

Charlotte was walking home to Dovercourt, Harwich, when Ellmore careered around a corner and hit her, said Samantha Leigh, prosecuting. Ellmore, of Devon Way, Harwich, was arrested at his parents' house, said Ms Leigh.

The diabetic was taking the drug Warfarin for renal failure and only a month before a doctor told him not to drink in conjunction with the medication. He was drinking on the night of the crash but it is not known whether he was over the legal limit.

Judge Christopher Ball QC banned the electrical engineer from driving for eight years and said he must pass an extended driving test to drive again.
