Driver jailed over death of cyclistA woman who killed an Army officer taking part in a cycle race has been jailed for causing death by dangerous driving.
Katie Hart, 19, hit Major Gareth Rhys-Evans from behind on the A1 at Eaton Socon, Cambridgeshire. The 37-year-old married father-of-two was riding in a time trial. Major Rhys-Evans, from Llandovery, Dyfed, had served with the Intelligence Corps and was based in Germany.
The Crown Prosecution Service said other motorists noticed cyclists taking part in the time trial. Hart denied causing death by dangerous driving for which she was convicted, but admitted causing death by careless driving. She was also banned from driving for two years at Huntingdon Crown Court.
"This case highlights the importance of concentrating and remaining focused while driving," said Inspector Alan Page after the hearing. "Just a short lapse in concentration can have fatal and tragic consequences."
"This was a tragic case of a cyclist killed by someone carrying out very bad and therefore dangerous driving," said prosecutor John Goodier, after the hearing. "The incident occurred on a good quality dual carriageway road, where visibility was clear and where other road users noticed cyclists taking part in time trials."
