Firm fined after avoidable accident

The Health and Safety Executive has highlighted the standards covering machinery guards after an incident at a bread manufacturer resulted in an employee having his finger amputated.

Thambirasaiyah Roy, 39, from Edgware, was operating a dough mixing machine when his left hand touched an unguarded beater leading to part of his index finger being severed.

His employer Bread Factory Limited admitted breaching health and safety regulations at City of London Magistrates' Court and was ordered to pay a £3,500 fine and £2,926 in costs.

An investigation by the HSE at the Hendon-based firm found there was not a guard covering dangerous parts of the mixer and earlier recommendations by the HSE over machinery maintenance had not been carried out.

HSE inspector Anne Gloor said: "This incident could easily have been avoided. The hazards associated with this type of machine are understood within the food manufacturing industry and there is clear guidance on the guarding standards which should be followed.

"There were clear failings on this occasion. Had a simple guard been fitted to this machine then Mr Roy would never have suffered these injuries."
