Children to get payouts over buggyMore than 40 children who sustained serious injuries to their fingers in the hinges of Maclaren's folding pushchairs are to receive compensation.
The buggy manufacturer refused to admit liability for the injuries, but the firm and its insurers agreed to award full damages. The amounts, which will be scaled on the severity of the injuries, will be invested until the children reach the age of 18.
A number of the children required surgery after losing part of their finger in the cases, which date back to 2003, while others suffered fractured bones or deep lacerations. A Maclaren spokeswoman said the company would review cases individually.
She added: "We are committed to fully recompense any child who's been genuinely injured by finger entrapment in one of our products. We take the safety of children very seriously.
"We have sold more than a million buggies in the past decade in the UK and have only had around 100 complaints. We feel this issue affects the whole industry and not just Maclaren."
In 2009 Maclaren recalled one million prams in the US after reports of similar injuries but, said the lawyers, it insisted that UK buggies were not affected and a recall has not taken place in this country. Hinge covers are available but customers must request them via the firm's website.
