Man crushed in ferry hydraulic door

A member of crew aboard a ferry has been left injured after becoming crushed in a hydraulic door.

The man was airlifted to hospital after the incident on the Julia Swansea to Cork passenger ferry off the Pembrokeshire coast.

The 45-year-old staff member is now in a stable condition in the North Devon District Hospital, and is being treated for a suspected broken pelvis.

The incident happened at 11.47pm on Monday about 10 miles south of St Anne's Head, Milford Haven.

After the man became trapped in the water-tight door Milford Haven Coastguard was called by ferry staff.

Medical assistance was given over the phone by staff at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

The man was airlifted to hospital at 2.40am on Tuesday by a helicopter from RMB Chivenor.

The Swansea to Cork route was reopened in March by Cork-based Fastnet, which operates MV Julia.

Fastnet Line chief executive Phil Jones said: "We can confirm that there was an accident on board MV Julia last night where a crew member was injured by a hydraulic door.

"Milford Haven Coastguard was alerted and the man was airlifted to North Devon District Hospital.

"He remains stable with a suspected broken pelvis.

"We are conducting our own investigation into the accident and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been informed."
