Pirelli fined over broken leg caseTyre manufacturing giant Pirelli has been fined £9,000 over an incident at a factory in Carlisle in which a worker broke his leg.
Allan Millar was struck from behind by a pallet being carried on a forklift truck as he walked through an area within the curing department at the Dalston Road site.
The 62-year-old contractor has not been able to return to his normal duties since the incident.
An investigation carried out by the Health and Safety Executive found that an assessment of the risks to pedestrians walking through the area had not been properly carried out by Pirelli.
The HSE report said contractors had not been informed of the precautions required to ensure their safety.
North Cumbria Magistrates' Court heard that the company had previously identified the area of the factory as a pedestrian free zone, and that forklift drivers could not see properly as their loads had to be lowered to avoid overhead obstacles.
The company pleaded guilty to breach health and safety regulations, and was order to pay costs of £4,282 as well as the fine.
