Brothers fined over worker fall

Two brothers have been fined following an incident at an industrial building site in Carlisle that left a worker with horrific head injuries.

Alan Hind was working on a project demolishing the building for brothers Robert and Eric Murray when the incident occurred.

The 28-year-old, from Corrie Common, near Lockerbie, fell 20ft (6m) to the floor, and suffered 16 skull fractures.

Parts of his brain were so badly damaged they had to be removed, while he also lost hearing in his right ear, and sight in his left eye.

He also sustained a damaged kidney, fractured wrist and broke his jaw in three places in the fall.

At Carlisle Crown Court, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said Robert Murray was in charge of the project, while Eric Murray was in charge of dismantling the building that Mr Hind was working on.

Robert, 56, of Annan, pleaded guilty to not hiring trained workers and failing to ensure work was carried out in a safe environment. He was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,000.

Eric, 54, of Dalton, near Lockerbie, was found guilty of failing to put in place measure to stop workers from falling and being injured. He was fined £5,000 and told to pay costs of £8,000.
