Woman burned in curry accident

A catering worker suffered severe burns after falling into a hot pot of chicken curry, health and safety inspectors have said.

chicken tikkaSudesh Bala received burns to her back, groin and buttocks in the accident, which happened when she was dragging the curry pot backwards across the floor while preparing the food for 500 people at an event at the NEC in Birmingham in October.

The 47-year-old now plans to sue the company she worked for, Luton-based Shobha UK, after claiming she didn't receive adequate health and safety training.

A Health and Safety Executive inspector visited the firm's premises in December last year and concluded that while the company's risk assessment and training records were "basic" they were "adequate".

Shobha UK said it sympathises with Mrs Bala and her predicament but insists it can not accept liability for her accident.
