Man's finger sliced off at factory

A worker had part of his finger sliced off in an accident a sweet factory, a court has heard.

The un-named 25-year-old, of Blackpool, was working at Tangerine Confectionery's plant in the town when his left hand was pulled into a sweet-making machine as he tried to clear a blockage on September 8, 2008. His index finger was severed to the top knuckle.

Blackpool Magistrates' Court heard that the man was off work for around five months after surgeons were unable to reattach the end of his finger due to crushed nerves.

The Health and Safety Executive launched an investigation into the incident and Tangerine Confectionery pleaded guilty to a breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 after it failed to make sure the machine stopped operating when the guard was not in place.

A fine of £3,400 was imposed on the firm, of Vicarage Lane, Blackpool, as well as prosecution costs of £4,568.
