Dublin Annual Conference PEOPIL

Tim Beasley, Partner and Head of Catastrophic Injury and Isidoro Bonilla, Solicitor specialising in cross border claims at Levenes attended the Annual Conference of The Pan European Organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers (PEOPIL) in Dublin, Ireland in late September 2023.

This annual conference of PEOPIL brought an excellent panel of experts and lawyers practicing in the field of personal injury to share their knowledge with their colleagues, over a period of 3 days.

Tim and Isidoro have been members of PEOPIL for a number of years now and are regular attendees of the annual conferences. On this occasion, the annual Conference in Dublin received lawyers from various jurisdictions in Europe, America and South Africa. In total, lawyers from 24 jurisdictions acting for Claimants all over the world were in attendance.

The Conference was a great success with 150 delegates attending for training and networking.

A 2-day seminars programme looking into the future of litigation

This annual conference was special in the sense of having not only a great programme, but also started to look into the future of litigation. We learned from our American colleagues that in the US over 1 million people have died through opioid overdose and claims being made against doctors and pharmacists are pursued. This was a fascinating talk about the liability issues.

Another American colleague gave tips in mediation in personal injury cases. Mediation is becoming more common as a way to resolve complex and high value cases in order to achieve early resolution of the claim and save costs.

One of the most interesting topics in the conference was Artificial Intelligence and future routes of litigation, bringing lawyers from the 24 jurisdictions together to consider how this could take place in the future.

As is often the case, Brexit was a topic to either send you to sleep or prick up your eyes, depending on your point of view. Despite Brexit, European lawyers continue to cooperate with each other to solve cross border problems relating to personal injury claims.

There were discussions on how to keep a work balance in a hybrid work environment with interesting comparisons of lawyers with racehorses, who break down if they are overworked.

Tim and Isidoro also had a great opportunity to network with colleagues from Turkey, Spain, Germany, Italy, US, South Africa, etc.

Levenes have an international outlook thanks to having so many solicitors who speak a foreign language.
