Farm Worker Suffers Severe Burns in Caravan Gas Explosion – £250,000 Settlement Secured  

Our client, a dairy herdsperson working on a farm, had been provided with onsite accommodation in a poorly maintained and unsafe caravan. The cooking stove was outdated and inadequately serviced, and the gas cylinder, along with the fire, smoke, steam, and gas detectors, were old, incomplete, or entirely non functional.

After living in these hazardous conditions for approximately two months, our client was preparing lunch when the gas stove suddenly exploded. He sustained catastrophic burns to 40% of his body and spent several weeks in a coma. His injuries have resulted in permanent scarring and long lasting psychological trauma.

Liability and Court Proceedings

The Defendant’s insurers initially admitted primary liability. However, once court proceedings were issued to protect our client’s position, the Defendant’s solicitors sought an extension of time to file their Defence – an attempt to obtain evidence that might allow them to withdraw their admission and shift responsibility onto our innocent client.

Levenes robustly opposed the request for further time and pressed for immediate disclosure of key documents. The Court accepted our arguments, ordering prompt disclosure and granting only a short extension for service of the Defence.

Settlement Achieved

Before complying with the Court’s disclosure order, the Defendant made a settlement offer of £250,000. After careful advice and consideration, our client accepted the offer, achieving a strong and timely resolution.
