Delivery driver bitten by dog receives compensation  

Levenes have concluded a settlement for a delivery driver who was bitten on his scrotum by a dog as he attempted to make a delivery to a residential address.

Our client had knocked on the door and then stepped back. The homeowner opened the door and the dog then leapt out and attacked our client.

Our client then used the parcel to fend off the dog before it could do more serious injury. Our client attended hospital and had a scan to make sure that he had not suffered any internal damage. Thankfully, his wound was superficial. He was given antibiotics as a precaution. He was off work for 5 days and could not play football for 6 weeks.

Can I claim compensation for a dog bite?

The insurers of the homeowner agreed to settle our client’s claim. The owner should have ensured that the dog was properly restrained when he opened the door. Dogs are well known to be territorial and can perceive visitors as a threat to the home. The owner should have known that and not opened the door until the dog was secure.

In this case, because the homeowner had insurance, the claim could be made. It is not compulsory to have insurance against liability for damage by dogs, but most responsible pet owners have insurance, which can be covered as part of buildings and contents cover or pet insurance.
